Children and loss

A child grieves differently from an adult — they may cry one hour and return to play the next, and that is a healthy response, not a lack of feeling. You do not need to have all the answers, nor to go through this alone. The free, 24-hour Helpline for Children and Young People, 116 111, supports children and teenagers through the hardest moments. We offer guidance on how to: choose words to suit the child's age (3–5, 6–11 years, teenagers) · avoid euphemisms such as 'fallen asleep forever' · decide whether the child should attend the funeral · recognise when a psychologist's help is needed.
